designer rewind: yves saint laurent

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent (yes) went down known as the most influential, and best designer of the 20th century, unarguably.

TIME TO GET SCHOOLED: Do you feel like feeling inadequate? At 17 years old, Yves Saint Laurent was enrolled at Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, and caught the attention of the editor of French Vogue. He was then introduced to Christian Dior, where he began learning under this iconic designer at the House of Dior. He began only completing your stereotypical intern tasks, but was eventually able to submit his design sketches. in august of 1957, Saint Laurent was told he was chosen to be Dior's successor when the time came, and it came much sooner than anyone thought: October of 1957. Saint Laurent was only 21 (that's where the inadequacy comes in). Not much longer after this, he was drafted into the french army, landed himself in the hospital, and was fired from Dior (breach of contract=$$$$$ to start his own house).

Fun Fact: Saint Laurent was the first designer to come up with a prêt-à-porter (ready to wear) line, which obviously changed the game for fashion to come.

Another Fun Fact: Saint Laurent was the first living designer to be honored at the MET Museum with a solo exhibit in 1983.

After YSL started to fall under the hands of drugs and alcohol, Tom Ford was hired to design the ready to wear, while Saint Laurent would continue with the couture until 2002 when Ford took the reins of the entire house.

As of 2016, Anthony Vaccarello succeeded Slimane who had been with Yves Saint Laurent since 2012. Another fun fact, you ask? Hedi Slimane dropped the Yves in the brand name, changing it to just Saint Laurent, which caused quite the stir. In the Fall 2017 RTW collection, Vaccarello looked back to YSL's love of luxury, leather and velvet. Vaccarello intented to "mix up über-luxe versions of clothes girls want to wear every day, and then give them a kind of brute romanticism, a tender toughness" (Vogue).

Hope you enjoyed this little designer rewind to find out who exactly Yves Saint Laurent was, and how he impacted fashion in the 1900s. stay fricken inspired!!!!!
